Cheney High School will move to Class 3A for football for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years.
The news was announced on Friday by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
The move was not a surprise. Cheney moved from 4A to 3A for all other sports and activities last fall, and continues to be in 3A this year. Schools are classified by enrollment for all activities every year based on that year’s enrollment. Football classifications are set every other year, and in effect for the following two seasons.
There were no significant changes in this year’s classifications for local or nearby schools.
Cheney is one of three 4A schools that will move to 3A for football. The others are Wichita Collegiate and Hesston. Seven schools will move up to 3A from 2A, but none are from the area. No other schools in The Times-Sentinel coverage area will change classifications for football.
Nearby, Haven will move up to Class 4A-Div. I, while Sedgwick will drop to 2A. Maize High will drop to 5A while Maize South moves up to 5A, putting both schools in the same classification as Goddard and Eisenhower.
New football districts have not been announced. It is possible that Central Plains League foes Cheney, Garden Plain and Conway Springs will be in the same district. Meanwhile, Goddard and Eisenhower – already in the same district – could be joined by the Maize schools.
