A teenage driver was hurt and temporarily trapped in her vehicle in a one-car crash south of Cheney before 7 p.m. Sunday, May 12.
Katrina Ukena, 18, was transported by ambulance Wesley Medical Cente. Her exact condition was unknown, but Cheney Fire Department chief Brad Ewy said her injuries were not serious. An air ambulance was initially called for, but that call was quickly cancelled.
The accident happened on 375th Street West on the S-curve just south of the Ninnescah River between 47th Street South and 55th Street South. The road was closed to traffic in both directions. The vehicle came to rest on its side on the west side of the ditch.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Cheney Fire Department responded to the scene along with the Cheney Police Department, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department and Sedgwick County EMS.
That stretch of road has become a concern to some people. There have been two fatal single-vehicle accidents along the same stretch of road in the past three years.
