Rumors of a small housing boom in Argonia have not been greatly exaggerated – there is one.
Argonia Development Company, LLC, is in the process of creating a new housing development north of town on Argonia Rd. Six houses are built and there are 11 more lots opening up, plus the developers are in the process of digging a lake that should be ready before the summer ends.
Argonia Development Company represents the combined efforts of mayor Alan Brundage, architect Kim Kiser, Jerry Kiser of Kiser Manufacturing, and Dale Rust. All four either live in Argonia or have strong ties to the town.
“All four of us are alumni of Argonia schools,” Brundage said. “We’re doing this to attract families with children to keep the school going.”
Argonia Development Company was founded approximately 10 years ago and was responsible for the creation of Argonia Mart. The company also has leveraged Argonia Mart to build the housing development.
The development was started several years ago, which is when the first six houses were completed. Construction on the development now is in its second phase. When the development is finished, it will have 23 houses with a three-acre lake in the middle of the development. Work began on the lake began two weeks ago and could be finished by mid-to-late July.
Brundage and the Argonia Development Company believe that improving housing is key to sparking improvement and growth in the city. While strengthening the tax base of Argonia is an ultimate goal, those who build in the development will receive a five-year tax abatement as an incentive to build and reside in Argonia.
“We determined early on that housing was the most important area we have to improve on in Argonia,” Brundage said. “A lot of our housing is pretty old and some houses have been condemned – we tear down a couple every year. To strengthen our tax base, we needed newer housing.”
Brundage also added that they are looking at affordable housing in the town itself.e my mom and I’m going to end up like her. This is another way of being like her.”
