Three
local teams qualified for State during regional tournaments on Tuesday.
Goddard
softball advanced to next weeks State tournament at Topekas
Hummer Sports Park with a 6-0 over Derby. Jenny Heerey picked up
the win. The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The score
stayed at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when Goddard scored
2 runs. The Lions then added 3 insurance runs in the sixth.
In
Tuesdays semifinals, Goddard (18-2) topped Southeast (2-18)
17-0, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first and adding 7 more
in the bottom of the second, run-ruling the Buffaloes in just 2-1/2
innings.
The
Lions move on to State with a 20-2 record.
The
Andale/Garden Plain softball team was unstoppable in its Class 4A
regional softball tournament Monday and Tuesday, run-ruling and
shutting out all three of their opponents to earn a trip to the
Class 4A State Tournament.
Andale
entered the tournament as the top seed with an 18-2 record. The
Indians blasted Buhler in the opening game, 14-0 in five innings.
They repeated that performance in the semifinals against Hesston,
coming up with another 14-0, five-inning shutout.
Their
opponent in the finals was Nickerson, the tournaments number
two seed. But Nickerson was no match for the Indians, who won 10-0
in five innings.
The
Andale/Garden Plain baseball won a regional baseball title for the
first time in school history after three tournament victories in
a Class 4A tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Wellington.
Andale
entered the tournament as the number two seed behind Nickerson but
both schools had identical 12-8 records. Andale took care of Kingman
in the opening round, 14-4, then defeated Clearwater 8-1 in the
semifinals Tuesday.
That
put the Indians against Wellington for the regional title. The Crusaders
upset Nickerson to get to the title game. Andale was not to be denied,
though, and won the tournament by defeating Wellington, 4-2.
Goddard
will host a 6A baseball regional on Thursday. The top-seeded Lions
(17-3) will open with No. 12 Southeast (2-17) at 4:30 p.m. With
a win, the Lions would face either No. 6 Heights (13-7) or No. 7
Derby (8-12) in the title game.
State
brackets are not yet available as several regional tournaments won't
conclude until Wednesday or Thursday. That information will be posted
at tsnews.com once it is available. State tournaments will be May
23-24.
