The annual Cheney Community Banquet will be held on Monday, Feb. 20, and this year’s headliner entertainment will be western music group Prairie Rose Rangers. Orin Friesen, a musician and long-time on-air personality at KFDI radio, heads the group. Friesen helped found the original Prairie Rose Wranglers group, which performed regularly in Benton, Kan., and made many appearances including at Carnegie Hall and on the Great Wall of China. The Prairie Rose Rangers are the house band at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper in Benton.
Other events on the evening’s schedule include the Cheney Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual program with updates on the efforts of the Chamber and other community organizations, and the annual Citizens of the Year award, which honors a local community member for his or her dedication to Cheney. The award is always a secret until the night of the banquet.
Doors will open at 5:45 p.m., and a catered meal from Syl’s Catering begins at 6 p.m. The Chamber program is at 7 p.m., followed by Royale’s performance at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 and must be purchased in advance. Event organizers said the event is open to anyone and encourage the public to be part of the night. Tickets are available at Cheney City Hall and the USD 268 district office. The banquet will be held at Cheney High School, and is sponsored by the Cheney Area Chamber of Commerce.
