Cardinals enjoy Florida trip

Band teacher Dennis Kerr acknowledges the crowd after performing with the Conway Springs High School concert band.

Staff report

After years of preparation and fundraising, the Conway Springs High School concert choir and band boarded buses at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, headed for Orlando, Fla.

The trip included opportunities for performance as well as jaunts to Disney World, Universal Studios and the beach.

“I think probably half of them had never been to the ocean, and half had never been on a plane before, so those were two really new experiences,” said band teacher Dennis Kerr, who, with choir teacher Ellen Kerr, aims to offer a spring break trip once during each student’s high school career.

Band and choir students performed at the Waterside Stage in Disney Springs, a shopping and entertainment complex on the Disney World campus.

The group spent Thursday through Sunday at Disney World and Universal Studios and also saw a performance of Blue Man Group, the internationally known performance art collective.

On Monday, March 14, the group set out for Melbourne Beach and enjoyed a beachside barbecue lunch.

After squeezing in some more shopping and a trip to the bowling alley the next day, the group departed for Conway Springs. The students arrived back at the high school at 2:30 a.m. March 16.

“Everything went fantastic,” said Dennis Kerr. “The kids were wonderful, the weather was wonderful. The performances went well, and we had good crowds. It just went very, very well.”
