Dollar General making inquiries in Conway Springs

By Paul Rhodes

Dollar General could be considering Conway Springs for a retail location.

While the company has not made any direct contact with the city of Conway Springs, an engineering firm representing Dollar General has inquired about the process for annexing a piece of property on the north edge of town. City staff members shared that information with members of the Conway Springs City Council at their meeting last week.

City staff members noted that any formal request for annexation would need to go through the local planning and zoning process. The property in question is located on the east side of Highway 49 (Conway Springs Road), just south of the railroad tracks and directly across the highway from Hired Man’s Grocery and Grill.

The property is currently zoned residential and would need to be rezoned for commercial use to accommodate a Dollar General store or other retail facility.

At their meeting last week, some council members raised concerns about the impact that a Dollar General store might have on other local businesses, and they had questions concerning the annexation process and other related issues.

By consensus, the council asked city staff to look into the questions that had been raised and to report back to the council at its next meeting.
