Garden Plain's Sierra Hays turned in the top qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday, setting up a Saturday showdown with Conway Springs' Emily Doffing, who was second. There were separated by .06 second in their qualifying teams as both won their prelim heats.

Hays also qualified for finals in the 300-meters, and she placed fifth in long jump.

Page Stuhlsatz won the pole jump as the only competitor to clear 10-6. She beat three other jumpers who vaulted 10-0.

Peyton Randolph placed sixth in triple jump.

4A

Clearwater's Hannah Tjaden turned in the top 100-meter qualifying time. She's the defending champ. She also qualified for the 300-meter finals. Jarrod Nickelson of CLearwater has the top 300-meter prelim time and was third overall in the 110-meter hurdles prelims.

Cheney's Taylor Needham is the favorite in the 400 meter finals after having the top prelim time. She also qualified in the 200 meters. Needham also pulled the Cheney girls 4x400 from 7th to 3rd on the final leg, putting them in the finals with the sixth-best time.

Cheney's Carlea Holt and Clearwater's Hannah Tjaden were among the bottom of the pack in terms of regional performances in the javelin, but they performed well on the big stage as Holt finished second and Tjaden took fourth.

Clearwater's Trevor Bowman placed 7th in shot put.

The 4A pole vault was extremely competitive this year. Five athletes cleared 13-6 and none were in the top three. Based on tiebreakers, Cheney's Brian Dewey finished eight, just out of medal contention. The top three finishers all cleared 14-0.

Clearwater's Alex Mumma tied for third in high jump.

Clearwater girls are sixth with 9 points, while Cheney is in a three-way tie for seventh with 8 points. Colby leads with 15 points, and four other teams have 10.

The Clearwater boys have 1 point, while the Cheney boys have no team points yet.

6A

Goddard's Natali Engle, a freshman, advanced to the 6A finals in the 200 meters. She also anchored the 4x400 relay which advanced with the sixth-best time.

Garrett Smith cleared 13-0 to place fifth in pole vault.

Abagayle Spilinek placed fourth in javelin, while Kevin Triplett was fourth in long jump.

Goddard boys are sixth with 7 points, but well behind leader Manhattan. The girls have four points and are in the second half of the pack.

6A State Softball

The Lions pounded out 12 hits in an 11-3 win over Derby on Friday, scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the third. Jessica Sturm got the win for Goddard.

The Lions play will play Olathe Northwest, which upset Maize 7-6. That game is at noon Saturday.

The other semifinal features Olathe East against Washburn Rural at 10 a.m.

The third-place game is at 2 p.m. in Lawrence, with the championship at 4 p.m.

4A State softball

Andale-Garden Plain shut out Clay Center 6-0 on Friday and now will face Paola at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the semifinal in Salina. Girard and St. James Academy are in the other semifinal.

The consolation game begins at noon, and the title game will be at 1 p.m.
