HAYSVILLE – A man has died following an officer-involved shooting in Haysville.

Police chief Jeff Whitfield provided a press release on Wednesday morning that offered some detail into what transpired on Tuesday evening.

“At approximately 4:57 p.m. (Tuesday), officers from the Haysville Police Department were dispatched to check the welfare of an individual that was reported as possibly suicidal at a residence in the 200 block of North Lamar. Officers went to that address but were unable to find the individual,” Whitfield wrote.

Using a vehicle tag number and a description of the subject's vehicle, officers located the vehicle at 227 N. Main in Haysville, which is located between Main Street Liquor and the Leeker's Family Foods parking lot. Officers were able to contact the subject, who was in his vehicle with a handgun in his lap.

“Officers tried to deescalate the situation, however they were not successful.

The subject refused to surrender the weapon, which resulted in officers shooting the man. The subject was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured,” Whitfield wrote.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office are investigating.

The name of the individual who died has not been released.
