Leonard William Henry Voss, 94, of Cheney, entered his eternal heavenly home on Dec. 4, 2023.

Leonard was born on June 7, 1929, at the farm home of his parents, Anna and Otto Voss. He graduated from Cheney High School in 1947 and met his future bride on a blind date. Leonard married Clara Belle Liston on June 1, 1952, at Riverside Methodist Church in Riverside, Iowa.

Leonard took over the family farm in 1954 after the death of his father. He raised a multitude of different animals as well as a multitude of different crops on the farm. He served many years on the township board. Leonard was a handy man seeing a challenge and calculating how to fix the situation. After updating the rental house in town, he surprised his children when announcing at Thanksgiving meal that this was the weekend for children to move him and their mother into their city house. He farmed the remainder of his life, even after retiring to his city home.

Leonard was a model of kindness. He enjoyed playing with his six children, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He worked hard for his family, at times taking a second job during the winter months. He was a quiet man of few words but full of gentleness, organization and wisdom. He always had an easy smile that radiated his joy. He was always ready to eat a cookie as a snack.

He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He served on many different boards and committees. Even the last few years when his eye sight was failing, he continued to begin his day with his daily devotions and Bible reading.

Leonard was preceded in death by his loving wife, Clara; his parents, Otto and Anna (Koster) Voss; sister, Caroline Voss; and grandson, Alexander Shults. His survivors include his children, Martha (Buddy) Beavers of Cheney, Marilyn (Rick) Shults of West Des Moines, Wayne (Cheryl) Voss of Cheney, Ellen (Rick) Born of Glendale, Ariz., John Voss of Cheney, and Julie (Bill) Haverkamp of Topeka; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A visitation with the family present will be from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, both at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Committal will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 639 N. Lincoln, Cheney, KS 67025.

Wulf-Ast Mortuary-Garden Plain Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
