Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputies are investigating an injury accident that resulted in a fatality last Sunday near Cheney Lake.

The accident happened at the intersection of 21st Street North and 391st Street West.

According to the the sheriff's office, the accident occurred at approximately 7:04 p.m.

It was reported a gray 2012 Nissan Sentra driven by Varun Aithagoni, a 22-year-old male foreign exchange student, was traveling east on 21st Street North and failed to yield at the stop sign. The Nissan was struck by a 1999 Chevy Tahoe traveling north on 391st Street West. The Tahoe was driven by Brandon Schroeder, 26, of Cheney.

Aithagoni and the female front seat passenger, Pratiksha Kunwar, 22, were transported to a Wichita hospital, where Kunwar was pronounced deceased at 8:10 p.m.

Aithagoni’s two rear seat passengers were released at the scene. Schroeder and his two passengers, a 2-year-old male and 3-year-old male, were transported with minor injuries to a local hospital.

The sheriff's office said all occupants were wearing seatbelts and there were no signs of intoxication at the time.
