Members of the Campus Colts have earned Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League honors. Demetrius Schley, a senior, was named to the boys second team, while Tyler Kahmann, sophomore, was honorable mention. On the girls' side, senior Gabby Bosley and freshman Venus Thanasouk were honorable mention.

One woman's curiosity about her family and heritage helped unite the Jacobs family in Haysville with a cousin they never knew they had. Wichita resident Lana Koker said she became very curious about her background because of a long-term arrangement from her family. A few months after taking a DNA test, a near match was identified with Thomas Bross, who resides in Pennsylvania.

The Vickers Petroleum station, located west of the train tracks near Main Street and Grand Avenue, is a Haysville landmark. It is one of a handful of older Haysville buildings to survive the 1999 tornado, and moreover is one of just two remaining examples of the Vickers chain's mid-century modernist “batwing” station design. The City of Haysville now owns it, and it serves as headquarters for the Haysville Chamber of Commerce. Those groups want to keep the historic gas station.

The Haysville police department's “Town Marhsall” car advanced to Round 3 of the Kansas Hometown Showdown, a photo competition sponsored by the League of Kansas Municipalities.

Haysville supporters outvoted Shawnee, setting up a “Sweet Sixteen” match-up with Wichita. Voting in Round 3 is open through Sunday, March 19. If Haysville wins, it will face either Wellington or Ellis for a spot in the Hometown Showdown's final four.

The GEM 5K race will be held Saturday, April 7, at Colt Stadium in Haysville. The 5-kilometer race was established in 214 to benefit someone in the Haysville community.

“GEM” stands for Gary Engles Memorial, a former Campus High School English teacher who waged a two-year battle with cancer before succumbing to the disease. This year's beneficiary is Kim Hall, 64, a first-grade teacher at Nelson Elementary who is fighting liver cancer. She has been a teacher in Haysville schools for 38 years.

It was a dinner that was a year in the making. Students at Nelson Elementary recently enjoyed a special Italian dinner that was served up by librarian Angela Boese with the help of other librarians and volunteers. The dinner was special, in part, because it was supposed to take place a year ago. Boese eats lunch every nine weeks with all the students who earn a certain number of advanced reading, or AR, points. Those students who meet goals get to be part of a party organized by Boese. The theme changes every nine weeks.

Members of the Friends of Haysville Community Library hosted a two-day fundraiser celebrating March 14 as Pi Day with, you guessed it, pie. “This was the first time since the pandemic that we were able to host this event without restrictions,” said FHCL president Klyda Fall. FHCL sold whole pies and slices at the Haysville Community Library to commemorate the day. Tables were set up for patrons to sit and enjoy their pie along with some free coffee.

Restrooms were completed at Randal L. Dorner park in Haysville at the end of February. “This was the last thing that needed to be done to complete the park,” said Mayor Russell Kessler.

The park began construction in 2013 and includes a dog park, soccer field and a 9.25 acre fishing lake.
