Quail Valley 4-H Club member Jenny Kerschen was recognized at both the Sedgwick County Fair and the Kansas State Fair for a photo she took of a barn at sunset.

“We have this old barn at our farm, and I tried a whole bunch of different angles, trying to get the clouds in the background,” Kerschen said. “It was a really pretty sunset, and the clouds looked really nice that night.”

The photo got a purple ribbon and a grand champion award at the county fair, as well as a purple ribbon at the state fair.

Kerschen is a sixth-grader attending Garden Plain Elementary. This is her third year in the photography project.

“Originally, when I started, I didn’t know a whole bunch about photography, but there’s a lot of different things you can do, with the angles and just experimenting. It’s just really cool,” she said.

Next year, Kerschen is planning to add a sewing project to her slate of fair entries, which also includes baking, arts and crafts and buymanship, as well as photography.

Her parents are Emily and Jon Kerschen. Her siblings Abigail, Willie and Otis all participate in 4-H, too.
