Staff report HAYSVILLE – A Wichita firefighter died last week while helping battle a fire just outside of Haysville.

Ty Voth, 27, collapsed mid-afternoon on Aug. 1 as crews were fighting a house fire. There were several paramedics on scene from multiple agencies, and they tended to Voth until he could be transported toa hospital. He died a short time later.

A cause of death has not been announced, and information on Voth's injuries has not been released.

An autopsy has been performed. It could take several weeks to get results.

The fire was on south Laura Drive, east of Interstate 35 near 95th Street South, which is southeast of Haysville.

Wichita Fire Department crews were responding through mutual aid.

Voth had been with the Wichita Fire Department for five years. He graduated from Newton High School in 2015. He earned an applied science degree in fire science from Hutchinson Community College's. He began his career with the Manhattan Fire Department in 2017.

He came to Wichita in 2019.

'He was selfless, dedicated and always put others before himself,' the Wichita Fire Department said in a statement. 'Our fire department is family, and this loss is felt deeply by us all. We will share details on honoring Ty’s life as they become available.'

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly also offered a statement.

'The death of any law enforcement officer is a tragedy,' Kelly said. 'A generational firefighter, Ty Voth devoted his life to protecting and serving his community, and we owe him a debt of gratitude.

My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones and colleagues at the Wichita Fire Department.'

The governor on Tuesday issued an executive order that flags statewide be flown at half-mast from sunup to sundown this Friday.

A “dignified transfer” was held last Saturday morning, as Voth's body was transported from the Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center to Resthaven Mortuary.

More than 150 firefighters were reported to have taken part in the transfer.

Many people lined the streets of Wichita to pay their respects.

A public viewing will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Park City Arena in Park City, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. As of Monday, information was pending about a memorial and where to send donations. Check the Wichita Fire Department Facebook page for additional information.

According to the City of Wichita website, Voth is the 21st Wichita Fire Department member who has died due to injuries or illness suffered in the line of duty. The list dates back to March 30, 1887, when George Tompkins died at a fire.

A hose cart turned over on him. Sedgwick County Fire District No. 1 has lost three firefighters in the line of duty.
