New days for Haysville citywide garage sales

HAYSVILLE – It’s time once again for the Haysville Citywide Garage Sales.
The annual event is considered to be the country’s first citywide garage sales, and features hundreds of sales each year.
This is the 44th year for the sales, and this year’s edition features a big change in the schedule.
The dates are this Thursday through Saturday. In years past, the sales were held on the Saturday and Sunday of the second weekend of August.
The citywide garage sales are sponsored by the Friends of Haysville Library. Money from sale permits is used to buy news books for the Haysville Community Library.
The board of directors for the Friends of the Haysville Library made the decision to change the schedule, said library director Ken Bell.
“The board was looking at a lot of cities. It was a good move to make,” he said.
Bell noted that Sunday sales had been diminishing over the years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Many neighboring communities with citywide garage sales hold them on the Thursday-through-Saturday schedule. Most of those sales take place in late spring and early summer.
Bell said he was unsure if Haysville’s garage sales always were on a Saturday and Sunday, but that the schedule had been that way for more than 30 years.
“Tradition speaks loudly, but they decided the practicality of the matter overcame tradition.”
The list of sale locations will be available starting at 7 a.m. Thursday. It can be found at www.haysvillecommunitylibrary. org. Links will be available on the Facebook pages for Haysville Happenings, Real Haysville Happenings and the Friends of the Haysville Community Library. Physical lists will be available at the library starting on Thursday.
