Kathryn Louise John, 86, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 10, 2025, at her home in Prosper, Texas.
She was born Jan. 13, 1938, to the Rev. Floyd and Lila Eichelberger in Sabetha, Kan. As the daughter of a pastor, she moved many times during her life but eventually moved to Argonia, and graduated from Argonia High School in 1955. After graduation, she met Leroy John and they were married on July 15, 1956. They raised their daughter, Jerrianne, and son, Monty, in Argonia and were very active in the community and the Argonia Wesleyan Church (now the Plains Church). They loved the Lord and endeavored to serve him throughout their lives. Kathryn and Leroy enjoyed 55 years of marriage until Leroy’s passing on Nov. 2, 2011.
They moved to Chanute in 1999 to be closer to their son’s family due to Leroy’s failing health. She was a very loving grandmother and thoroughly enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren. She had a sweet spirit that made her a friend to everyone. She loved attending her church and the Chanute Christian Women’s Club and had many friends there. She enjoyed reading and cooking, but her real pleasure was watching sports, especially Kansas Jayhawks basketball.
In 2019, she moved to Prosper, Texas, to live with her daughter, and enjoyed the years they shared together. As her health failed due to Alzheimer’s disease, her daughter was a loving caregiver and support. They attended Heritage Church of McKinney, Texas, where she, of course, made many friends.
She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Garrison of Tyler, Texas; daughter, Jerrianne John, of Prosper, Texas; and her son, Monty (Carol) John, of Winfield; and her grandchildren, Justin (Morgan) John and Brian (Sarah) John of Chanute, and Lauren John of Winfield. She also is survived by six great-grandchildren, Jessa, Benji, and Kenna John, and Sadie, Samuel, and Benjamin John, all of Chanute.
Her parents and her husband preceded her in death. She will be missed by many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Kathryn will be held at the Heritage Church of McKinney in McKinney, Texas, on Jan. 18, at 2 p.m.
A visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 500 North Forest Ave. in Chanute. Burial will take place Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the Argonia City Cemetery in Argonia.
Memorials are suggested to Highland Avenue United Brethren Church in Chanute and can be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Services are under the personal care of Wickham Family Funeral Home, 500 North Forrest Ave., Chanute, KS 66720.
