Roberta C. Swinehart
Roberta C. Swinehart, 96, retired registered nurse, of Norwich, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, at Avena Living of Clearwater.
Roberta was born on Oct. 22, 1929, in Newton, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Malinda (Chappell) Toevs. She grew up in Newton, where she attended Newton public schools. She graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1947 and continued her education at Wichita University for two semesters. She transferred to Kansas State and received her bachelor of science degree in 1953, while at the same time completing a five-year nursing program at KU Medical Center. She began working at Bethel Clinic in Newton.
Roberta was united in marriage to John Edgar Swinehart on Nov. 4, 1953, in Newton. They made their home most of their life in the Norwich community, where they raised their three children. They moved to their farm in 1966.
In 1967, Roberta returned to nursing and worked at Harper Hospital for 29 years. She retired in 1996. John passed away April 27, 2014.
Roberta attended the First Baptist Church, Norwich,. She also was formerly active in Jobe’s Daughters in Newton.
Roberta also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Donald Toevs and Horace Toevs; and two sisters, Marcella Throne and Judith Cox.
She is survived by two sons, John Swinehart and David Swinehart (Jodi), and one daughter, Jane Cox, all of Norwich; one brother, Bruce Toevs of Boise, Idaho; one sister, Betty Turman of Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren, Tara Riedel (Mikhail), Courtney Cox (Chris), Cody Swinehart, Grant Swinehart, James Mevey, John Mevey (Chelsea); 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at the First Baptist Church, Norwich. Private inurnment.
