Alvena Halsey King, 92, of Conway Springs, passed away Friday, August 1, 2025 at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs.

Alvena was born November 25, 1932 at Kincaid, Kan., the middle child of Frank Morrow Tull and Ollie Pearl (Engelman) Tull. She attended one-room schoolhouses in Kincaid, Garnett and Waverly, Kan., through the eighth grade. She moved with her family to Conway Springs in 1946 and started her freshman year. She graduated from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1950. Alvena began working for the Election Commissioners’ office at the Sumner County Courthouse. She soon began working at Boeing Aircraft as a file clerk for the Boeing Material Review Board and Quality Control Inspectors departments.

Alvena was united in marriage to Robert Lee “Bob” Halsey on Aug. 14, 1953, in Conway Springs. They made their first home in an apartment in Conway Springs. They later moved to 125 S. 12th Street in 1960. The couple was blessed with three children, Scott, Bryan and Roxann. Bob passed away on May 28, 1980.

In 1968, Alvena began working in the Kyle Trueblood school cafeteria. She later became the head cook and continued in preparation of school lunches for 23 years.

On Sept. 1, 1981 Alvena married Delton Joe King. She and Joe retired in 1991 and enjoyed traveling, visiting 48 of the 50 U.S. states. Joe passed away on March 21, 1996.

Alvena was a long-time member of the Methodist Church, where she was active in numerous capacities throughout her life. She was also a member of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron in 1968 and 1976, and District Aid in 1982. In 1969, she assisted in the formation of Rainbow Girls in Conway Springs.

Alvena also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Raymond, Larry and Dale Tull; one grandson, Jason Brian; and one great-grandson, Baker Halsey.

She is survived by her children, Scott Halsey of Wichita, Bryan Halsey (Debra) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Roxann Halsey of Conway Springs; one sister, Marie Pettegrew of Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Jesse, Daphne, Christopher, Bill, Natalie and Kurt; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Conway Springs Methodist Church, Conway Springs. Interment will be in Conway Springs Cemetery, Conway Springs.
