Margaret Leigh (Luther) “Peggy” Chitwood,
Margaret Leigh (Luther) “Peggy” Chitwood, 81, left her earthly home on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Mountain View, Ark.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1943 to Lloyd Aaron Luther and Thelma Mae Maxine (Mather) Luther at Goodland, Kan. Peggy graduated from Winona High School in 1961 and attended Bartlesville Wesleyan College in Oklahoma for four years. After college, she worked at a nursing home in Oakley, where she met harvesting custom cutter Henry Nusz and they began dating. They were married and made their home in Howard, Kan. To this union came three daughters, Deborah Ann, Esther Faye and Edna Michele. Henry passed away in 1979.
Peggy moved to Conway Springs, and later married Ralph Kerschen. Soon after, Ralph was stricken with cancer and died a year and a half later. After the passing of her husband Ralph, she was a stay-at-home mother to her three daughters, which gave her great pride. During this time, Peggy helped on her family farm, filling in when needed, usually tending to cattle. She then earned her CNA license. Peggy worked at Spring View Manor as a CNA. She then went on to become a home health nurse at Sumner County Home Health Agency.
Peggy was introduced to John Chitwood through a mutual friend in the late 1980s. A friendship began and developed into a relationship. She enjoyed spending weekends traveling to steam engine shows with him. They were then married in 1996 and moved onto the Chitwood family farm east of Conway Springs. They farmed for a short time and then turned their cattle barn into a music barn, entertaining the neighbors three times a month with food and music for the next 20 years. Peggy always enjoyed cooking and visiting with friends. They sold their farm in 2019 and moved to Mountain View, Ark., where they purchased the Jimmy Driftwood Music Barn and continued entertaining the public.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 28 years, John Chitwood; brothers, Phillip Earl (Caroline) and Michael Dale (Diane); sister-in-law, Darlene; daughters, Deborah Ann (Chad) Davis, Esther Faye Deatrick, and Edna Michele (Marcus) Pauly; grandchildren, Dakota (Rissa) Davis, Ethan (Addie) Davis, Tyson Davis, Tabias (Rachel) Davis, Aspen (Brandon) Tillotson, Lakin (Kyson) Sacket, Claire Deatrick, John Deatrick, William Deatrick, Derek Pauly (Saige) Dominic Pauly, Blake (Lexi) Pauly, Bristol Pauly, and Brooklyn Pauly; nine great-grandchildren, and two arriving soon.
