Marie Elizabeth Ternes, 95, of Arlington, Kan., died April 6, 2026, at her home. She was born Oct. 2, 1930, in Humphrey, Neb., to Edward and Theresa (Melcher) Beller.

Marie graduated from Garden Plain High School in 1948. She worked as a dental assistant for Doctors Olson, Wells, and Jensen in Hutchinson for many years before retiring in 2002. Marie also assisted her husband in his business, Ternes Champlin Service.

Known as the “banana nut bread” lady of Arlington, which she gifted to friends and family, Marie also was active in volunteering for just about everything in the Arlington community, enjoyed golfing at Ninnescah Valley Country Club, and cross-stitching baby quilts for family and friends. She also attended, along with several ladies from Arlington, Tuesday morning Bible study led by Pat Thayer at Carolyn’s restaurant.

On April 26, 1949, Marie married Peter M. “Pete” Ternes, in Garden Plain. They shared nearly 66 years of marriage before his death on Feb. 15, 2015.

She is survived by her daughters, Judy and Dennis Stephan of Valley Center, Kathy and Chuck Warren of Hutchinson, Pat Smith of Wichita, and Nancy Schindler of Loveland, Colo.; grandchildren, Melissa and Jevon Gearhardt, Ashley and Dan Blank, Monica Warren, Michael and Mila Warren, T.J. and Anna Warren, Sarah and Kody Base, and Laura and Chad Smith; great-grandchildren, Dakota Gearhardt, Dawson Gearhardt, Denton Gearhardt, Abrielle Blank, Joshua Blank, Irene Warren, Alden Warren, Catalina Warren, Kaden Smith, and Ryder Base; sister, Della Leis of Garden Plain; sister-in-law, Sharon Ternes of Arkansas City; grand-dog, Micah; and many extended family members.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, and Rosella Wait and Laverna Shaw.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at Crestview Bible Church, 2401 N. Halstead St., Hutchinson. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Arlington Cemetery.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who will cherish the memories of her sweet and humble spirit and the example of her untiring work ethic.

Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Friday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Marie insisted that no flowers be donated for her services but that memorial donations be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation to assist veterans, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
