Roy Eccles
Roy Glenn Eccles, 82, of Cheney, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2024, at his home.
He was born Feb. 8, 1942, at Gridley, Kan., the son of Perry and Betty (Neely) Eccles. He was raised in Gridley and worked as a farm hand and in the oil fields when he was young.
On Feb. 28, 1965, he and Vivian Lynn Gleue were married at Aliceville, Kan. They became the parents of a daughter, Angela. They made their home in Wichita, where Roy started out as a welder before becoming a structural steel detailer at Christopher Steel for many years. He and Vivian moved to Cheney in 1978. He later worked as a carpenter for the Wichita schools and as a school bus driver for the Goddard schools (the kids on his route loved him), but because of his passion for steel detailing, he continued to do freelance steel detailing for many more years, almost to the day of his death.
Roy was an avid University of Kansas basketball fan, loved watching baseball games, trains (especially old steam engines), and enjoyed walking daily around the golf course in Cheney with Vivian. Roy was a loving and devoted husband and father.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lee Eccles, and sister, Donna Scott; and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
He leaves Vivian, his wife of more than 59 years, of Cheney; his daughter, Angela Classen (Michael), Grand Junction, Colo.; three step-grandchildren; brothers, Kenny Eccles (Jeanette), Madison, Kan., Gene Eccles (Marilyn), Waverly, Kan., and J. D. Eccles (Jo), Gridley; a half-sister, Nadene Daughty, Tecumseh; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial followed in St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Aliceville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, PO Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
