The Cheney Cardinals, at left, line up to congratulate the Goodland Cowgirls, who beat the Cardinals on Saturday in the Class 3A State championship basketball game. Cheney has won State championships in 2010 and 2021, and placed second in 1991, 2011, 2017, 2019 and 2023. The Cardinals were a heavy favorite in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the State tournaments after the first round. Cheney had won to advance to the final four that year.
