The Cheney Cardinals baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season last Thursday against Chaparral, taking the first game of a doubleheader 12-0 and the nightcap 12-2. Cameron Eastman tossed a two-hitter in the opener, striking out five and walking two as he kept the Roadrunners off the scoreboard.

Argonia and Cheney visited Conway Springs for the Cardinals’ home participation meet last Thursday’s. Team scores were not kept.

Athletes from Argonia, Campus, Cheney, Clearwater, Garden Plain and Goddard competed in last week’s Shocker Pre-State Challenge, held at Wichita State University in conjunction with the K.T. Woodman Collegiate meet.

Owls send small squad The Eisenhower Tigers boys track and field team placed second in the 10-team field at Pratt last week on Thursday, scoring 91 points. Hays won the meet with 139 points, and Pratt was third with 66 points.

The Goddard Lions track and field teams both placed sixth at last week’s Maize South meet, held on Thursday. The girls scored 28 points to place sixth out of eight teams, and the boys were sixth among nine teams with 27 points.

On Saturday, all four boys tennis teams in the TSnews coverage area were in Goddard to compete in the John Markham Spring Classic. Eisenhower singles player Kyle King had the best result of any local player, defeating Topeka West’s Carter Cool 8-4 to claim third place.

The Campus Colts continued their track season at Maize High School last Friday. The girls scored 40 points, placing sixth out of 10 teams.

The Derby Panthers beat the Campus Colts in an 11-team meet held at the Glenn Crum Natatorium at Campus High on April 11. The Panthers and Colts were by far the two best teams, but the Panthers were clear winners.

With much of the field competing at the Shocker Pre-State meet at Wichita State University (see related story), the Clearwater Indians track and field team sent a smaller squad to last Thursday’s Valley Center Invitational.

The Eisenhower Tigers boys golf team shot 287 – one of just two teams to break 300 – to win Monday’s Andover Central invitational at Terradyne Country Club. The Tigers beat Andover Central by just six strokes.
