Robert Glen Wall
Robert Glen Wall was born Jan. 29, 1946, to Elmer and Frieda (Bartel) Wall in Hillsboro. He was the oldest of three siblings. His brother, Richard, was four years younger, and his sister, Sandra, was 10 years younger. They were raised on the family farm, which was one mile west of Hillsboro.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior as a young child and was baptized into the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church on July 26, 1959, by the Reverend Marvin Hein. He enjoyed playing basketball in high school and college, hunting, and making cars go faster than they were supposed to. He and his brother, Richard, were very mechanically gifted and often worked on cars together. He also worked the harvest crew for three summers. He graduated with a business degree from Tabor College in 1968.
He married Joyce Regier on Aug. 16, 1968, in Buhler. They began their life together in Evanston, Ill., in I-W service for two years and then returned to Kansas, where he began his 38 year banking career at Union National Bank. Their son, Brian, was born in 1975 and daughter, Lisa, was born in 1979.
They moved to Newton in 1981, where Bob worked at Midland National Bank as a senior vice president of lending until 1988, where his career culminated as resident, CEO, and chairman of the board of The First National Bank of Conway Springs for 20 years. While in Conway Springs, Bob also introduced his passion for family snow ski trips to Pagosa Springs as well as drag racing his custom Corvette. During these years, Lisa married Chris Frantz in 2002 and Brian married April Wichert in 2003. The yearly family ski trips continued, with all the grandchildren skiing together until 2023.
Prostate cancer abruptly ended his banking career in 2008, and Bob and Joyce moved to Hillsboro. Bob and Richard realized their dream to farm together again for five years until Richard’s death in 2005 from myelodysplastic syndrome. Richard had already built a shed on French Creek revival land 1.5 miles north of Hillsboro, so Bob and Joyce built a farmstead there. It brought tremendous joy to them, enjoying life there with their six grandchildren and others that the Lord sent them.
Bob endured many health challenges these last 17 years, but seven weeks ago he also was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome as well as acute myeloid leukemia and died at home Sunday morning, July 6.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and sister-in-law.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of the home; one son, Brian and April (Wichert) of Edmond, Okla.; one daughter, Lisa and Chris Frantz of Hesston; grandchildren, Tyler and Eli Frantz, Annie, Brooklyn, Lexie, and Claire Wall; and one sister, Sandra and John B. Garrard of Lincolnville, Kan.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family would direct donations to the Richard Wall Scholarship Fund at Tabor College. Burial service was conducted at French Creek Cemetery on Monday, July 7, with immediate family present. Memorial service will be held at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church on Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m.
