Homer Dale Compton
Homer Dale Compton was born Dec. 21, 1928, on a farm near Anness, Kan., the son of Alson Streeter Compton and Zama Zoe Schammehorn Compton. He departed this life July 29, 2025, at the age of 96 years, 7 months.
Homer grew up in the Milton community, where he attended Milton schools. He graduated from Milton High School with the class of 1948, where he was the sole surviving member.
Homer was united in marriage to Helen Pat Vosburgh on July 30, 1950, in Wichita. They moved to Cheney in 1952, where they made their home and raised their family of five children.
Homer began working at Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita, September of 1950. He later worked at Cessna Aircraft, but returned to Boeing in 1972 as a modification mechanic until retiring in 1991.
Homer was a member of the Cheney United Methodist Church, member of the Methodist Men, and a former member of Lions International.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Robert, Harold, Roy, Glenn, Earl and Lawrence “Pete” Compton; two sisters, Mary Jane Alloway and Esther Fornshell; one son, Darin Compton; and one son-in-law, Stan Dixon.
Homer is survived by his four daughters, Vicki Turner and husband Stacy of Wichita, Kim Uppendahl and husband Bruce of Cheney, Jana Howell and husband Steve of Cheney, and Sundi Dixon of Santo, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and many friends.
Memorial donations may be made to Cheney Methodist Church or Cheney Golden Age Home.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Cheney Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carol Edling Jolly officiating. Intermment will follow the service at Pioneer Cemetery. A lunch and reception will follow at the church for all to attend.
