Mary Joslin
With deep love and sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mom, Mary Joslin, at the Parkway Nursing Home in Edwardsville, Kan., on Jan. 11, 2026. Born on July 29, 1937, Mary was the last surviving child of the eight children born to Charles and Sarah Steinbacher.
Mary grew up with her siblings on a farm near South Mound, Kansas, where she quickly learned the value of a strong work ethic, discipline and love of family.
Mary lived a very interesting life doing myriad things. As a young adult, Mary joined the Sacred Heart Convent. Eventually learning this was not her calling, she then taught elementary school for several years in Dodge City and Wichita. During that time, on a blind double date with her sister, Gertrude, and future brother-in-law, Gene Grabs, Mary met her future husband, Dean Joslin.
Dean and Mary moved to Argonia, where they established their family farm. Together there, they reared their six children, Jeff, Jay, Janeé, Jon, Julie and Jalana. Mary was her kids’ biggest fan. In addition to nurturing and loving them, she spent tireless hours transporting all of them to countless sporting events/practices, piano lessons/recitals, or whatever activity they showed an interest in. She was always there for them in every way.
After the children were raised, Mary went to college and earned a degree as a pharmacy technician and worked at the Dillon’s Pharmacy in Wellington.
Mary loved to travel. Due to family commitments, she did not get to do so as much as she wanted. So, when the opportunity presented itself, Mary took a nannying position for a very nice family in Westport, Conn. She loved caring for babies and toddlers again!
Mary later moved back to Kansas and bought a home in Lawrence. She chose Lawrence due to her unwavering love for the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team. Rock Chalk! She also found the perfect home for her to pursue her love of gardening. Mary took great pride in maintaining a beautifully landscaped yard and delighted in the compliments from friends and neighbors as they walked by.
Mary’s life was filled with many joys and unfortunately sadness. She is preceded in death by her children, Jeff, (age 18), and Julie, (age 47); sisters, Lois Giefer, Theresa Smith, Sara Grosdidier and Gertrude Grabs; brothers, Raymond Steinbacher, Gene Steinbacher, and Charles Steinbacher; and her parents, Charles and Sarah Steinbacher. She is survived by her children, Jay Joslin of Overland Park, Janeé Joslin (Debi) of Virginia Beach, Va., Jon Joslin (Nicole) of Lawrence, and Jalana Cloud (Scott) of Tonkawa, Okla.; and her grandchildren, Sarah Joslin, Samantha Joslin, Giana Joslin, Joslyn Cantrell; two great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews and dear friends.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Parkway Nursing Home for the wonderful care they provided for Mary.
Mary was happiest when she was gardening, sewing or playing bridge with friends. She possessed a unique ability to make things thrive. Whether nurturing the earth or caring for those she loved, Mary left the world more beautiful than she found it. We are going to miss her witty, dry sense of humor that, without fail, always left us laughing out loud.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Danville. Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Danville.
Memorials in memory of Mary may be made payable to the Immaculate Conception Altar Guild and can be sent in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003.
