William M. “Bill” McNabney, 76, of Conway Springs, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2023, at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs.

He was born Aug. 7, 1946, at Emporia, the son of Harold Gibson McNabney and Anabel Wilma (Price) McNabney. He moved with his parents to Wichita at the age of 1.

Bill grew up in northwest Wichita at 2848 N. Charles St. and attended Wichita public schools. He graduated from Wichita North High School with the class of 1964, and then continued his education at Wichita State University.

Bill entered the U.S. Army on July 13, 1966, where he served his country in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on May 1, 1968.

Bill was united in marriage to Frances Van Liew on June 17, 1972, at the United Methodist Church in Conway Springs. They made their home at 718 W. Spring St., and later built their new home there in 1993.

Bill worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal service before later working for Lange Brothers Excavating. He later became a self-employed mechanic at his residence. He loved to rebuild cars and successfully restored his granddad’s 1958 Ford, which he took to numerous car shows in the area.

Bill was a member of the Shades of the Past Car Club and had served on the Conway Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1991, and his mother in 2009.

Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Fran McNabney, and Harley, their doberman; one sister, Janet Stuck and her husband Dennis of Bel Aire; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Military honors were by U.S. Army Honor Guard, Fort Riley, Kansas. Interment followed in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
