Remembering my lunch date with Dan Carney at the Candle Club

Body
Paul Rhodes | Publisher & Editor I read with great interest this past week a story about the famous (and infamous) Candle Club in Wichita, which was celebrating its 65th anniversary. I've only dined once at the Candle Club, which through all these years has thrived as a private club near the corner of 13th and Woodlawn on Wichita's east side.

The power of community coming together

Body
The recent tornado that stretched from Greensburg to Plevna went right through the middle of our farm, missing our house and the farm shop by about a mile. The destruction of neighbors’ homes and loss of livestock is incredibly sad, but our entire community has rejoiced that no human lives were lost. Things can be replaced, people can’t.

Fun comes in many layers, especially all at once

Random Thoughts Having nieces and nephews several years younger than my adult children gives me an opportunity to relive the joys and sorrows of having little ones, without having to go back to that life 24/7. Fortunately, the stories that are shared about the littles in our family are far and away positive, happy ones.

A new appreciation for our own histories

Body
I got a renewed appreciation for our own histories over the long Memorial Day weekend, and the importance of giving others a chance to share that history. The holiday weekend marked my 50-year high school reunion, which was a big deal full of visits with old classmates, shared stories that were both funny and touching, and a chance to collectively catch our breath over how fast time flies.

Gravesite care when you can't get there

Body
Savvy Senior Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend any services that offer gravesite cleaning and care? I recently visited my parent’s cemetery gravesite over Memorial Day weekend and found that their headstones were overtaken by weeds and moss and need to be cleaned. I live in a different state and can’t get back very often. Who can I call on to help me with this?
