Cardinals win substate title, Owls eighth

The Cheney Cardinals girls golf team will take a lot of momentum into next week’s State tournament after winning the Class 3-2-1A substate at Larned on Monday.
Cheney won the title with a score of 401, three strokes ahead of runner- up Larned. Both teams, plus Thomas More Prep-Marian from Hays, are State bound.
Leading the Cardinals were a quartet of top-10 finishers. Raegen Black finished third with a score of 93, while Ella Haar placed seventh after carding a 99, Hailey Wells took ninth with a score of 104 and Audrey Webb shot a 105 to finish 10th. Emmerson Bearley placed 11th with a score of 106.
Meanwhile, Garden Plain took eighth with a score of 549. Sophia May carded a score of 130 to finish 36th and lead the Owls.
At last Tuesday’s Central Plains League Tournament in Kingman, the Cardinals swept the top six positions to win the league title with ease, shooting 367 as a team to outdistance the field by a whopping 76 strokes.
Black carded an 88 to win the league title, while Bearley took second with a 92, Haar carded a 943 to place third, while Webb was fourth with a 94, Wells shot a 96 to place fifth and Ashlyn Satterlee finished sixth with a score of 98.
The Owls took fourth at the CPL tourney with a 489. Hannah Mans shot a 119 to place 18th and lead Garden Plain.
The Cardinals will compete Monday and Tuesday at the Class 3-2-1A State tournament in Salina.

Tigers, Lions both State bound
The Eisenhower Tigers and Goddard Lions girls golf teams are both headed to State after finishing second and third, respectively, at Monday’s Class 5A substate at Tex Consolver Golf Course in West Wichita.
The Tigers shot a 371, 21 strokes behind substate champion Bishop Carroll, while Goddard carded a 411 to edge out Arkansas City by five strokes for the final State berth.
Stella Wright paced Eisenhower with a score of 86 to take second, while Aubrey Hardtarfer carded a 90 to finish fifth and Olivia Whittaker shot a 96 to place 10th.
Meanwhile, Sydney Chapman paced the Lions with a score of 93 to finish seventh.
The Tigers and Goddard placed in the top three at last Tuesday’s Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division II tournament at Hesston Golf Course.
Eisenhower shot a 342 to place second behind league champion Andover, while the Lions shot a 382 to take third.
Four Tigers medaled at league – Wright shot an 80 to finish third, while Hardtarfer was sixth after shooting an 83, Riley Pate took ninth with an 87 and Reese Knudson finished 11th after carding a 92.
Meanwhile, Chapman shot an 83 to place fifth and medal for Goddard. Eisenhower and the Lions compete Monday and Tuesday at the Class 5A State tournament in Emporia.

Campus, Clearwater wreap up season
The Campus-Clearwater Colts girls golf team wrapped up its season on Monday, with the Campus golfers competing in the Class 6A substate at Dodge City and the Clearwater golfers playing at the Class 4A substate at Hesston.
Leading the Campus golfers at Dodge City was Baylee Norris, who finished 21st with a score of 111 to just miss the cut for State. Meanwhile, Makena Hampton also placed 21st with a score of 100 and also just missed a shot at State.
Last Tuesday at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III-IV tournament at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney, Hampton finished 28th with a score of 50.
