Joan A. Mies, 86, of Conway Springs, died Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at Ascension Via Christi-St. Francis, Wichita.
Joan was born June 4, 1937, at Glenham, S.D., to Adolph Junker and Mathilda (Heimbuck) Junker. She moved with her family to Britton, S.D., at the age of 4, and later to Amhurst, S.D., in 1948. She attended Amhurst High School until moving to Milton, Kan., her senior year. She graduated from Milton High School with the class of 1956. She began working as an information operator for Southwestern Bell in Wichita.
Joan was united in marriage to Vincent Aloysius Mies on May 4, 1957, at Wichita. They made their home at 113 S. 12th in Conway Springs, where they raised their family of six children.
In 1977, Joan returned to work and was employed the next 17 years at American Carpet, where she eventually became a training supervisor. She also worked as a part-time bartender for G. & G. Bar in Conway Springs until retiring in 2002. Vince died Oct. 26, 2004.
Joan was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Conway Springs, and the Altar Society.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Leland, Sherwin and Clarion Junker; one sister, Norna Ochs; two sons, Terry and Ronald Mies; and one daughter, JoEtta Thomas.
Joan is survived by one son, George Mies (Kris) of Cheney; two daughters, Sharon Billups (Ed) of Conway Springs, and Charleen Mies of Wellington; two brothers, Meryle Junker of Roggen, Colo., and Dean Junker of Lakewood, Colo.; two sisters, Elura Burdine of Rockledge, Fla., and Sandra Brown of Prior Lake, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and many friends.
A rosary was recited at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Conway Springs, with Father Kyle Dugan as celebrant. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Conway Springs.
