Jesse Irvin More
Jesse Irvin More, 90, passed away peacefully on Jan. 25, 2025, at his home in rural Viola, with his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, Gail, by his side. Born on Aug. 11, 1934, in rural Norwich to Claude E. and Ethel May (See) More. Jesse lived a life full of hard work, love, laughter, and an enduring dedication to his family and community.
Jesse’s early life was shaped by both responsibility and resilience. He attended school in Viola and Milton until the 11th grade when his father’s accident necessitated Jesse leaving school to help support his family. This selflessness and determination would become defining traits throughout his life. In those early years, Jesse married and became a proud father to two daughters, Judy and Joyce, before moving to California with his brother to build gunite pools. While in California, the family grew to include Larry, Brenda and Tina.
After his first marriage ended, Jesse married the love of his life, Gail Blankenship. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising a blended family and enjoying six decades of laughter, travel, and shared purpose. Shortly after their marriage, Jesse and Gail returned to Kansas to be closer to family and provide their children with the wholesome values of rural life. In 1970, they moved to a farm near Viola, where Jesse’s ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit gave birth to More’s Excavating in 1973. What began as digging a pond for his family blossomed into a thriving business that became a staple in the community.
Jesse was a man who could accomplish anything he set his mind to. Whether remodeling homes, overhauling cars, or mastering technology in his later years, Jesse exemplified resourcefulness and a thirst for knowledge. A lifelong learner, he especially loved reading technical manuals and delving into the world of computers. Yet, his greatest joy came from being a grandfather, spoiling his grandchildren, and filling their lives with endless love, stories, and mischief.
Jesse was known for his good-natured stubbornness, quick wit, and a penchant for playful teasing. He loved to travel and boat, finding joy in the simple and extraordinary moments of life. Jesse cherished his community and delighted in attending Bulldog Reunions in Viola, where he reconnected with friends and celebrated the shared memories of a life well-lived.
Jesse is survived by his loving wife, Gail; his children, Judy, Larry, Brenda, Annette, Tina, Mike, and Barbara; and a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward his wisdom, kindness, and humor. He is also survived by many other family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ethel; his daughter Joyce; and his siblings, Earl, Marion, Mildred, and Shirley.
A visitation to celebrate Jesse’s life will be be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Viola Presbyterian Church, 304 S. Grice Street, Viola, with a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Jesse will be laid to rest in the Viola Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to the Viola Presbyterian Church, 304 S. Grice Street, Viola, KS 67149.
Jesse Irvin More will be remembered as a man of strength, integrity, and love – a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose legacy of generosity and humor touched countless lives. He leaves behind a life story rich in meaning, and a family bound by the love he so abundantly shared.
