CHENEY – At its June meeting, members of the Cheney Chamber of Commerce approved a beautification project for Kirkham Michael in downtown Cheney and agreed to contribute $200 to the project. It was a good opportunity for the Cheney Chamber to review its Main Street Grant program, and make note that funds are still available for more projects.

Several local students were among more than 6,400 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students named to the dean's list for spring semester. Qualifications vary by college.

GODDARD – A new venue for games and drinks has opened in Goddard. OutWest has been open for two weeks now, and is giving folks in western Sedgwick County a place for a beer or a mixed drink, food and snacks, games and more.

Cities and towns across the country commemorate special days with various festivities, particularly when warm weather beckons people outdoors. Fireworks long have been a popular way to cap off parades, concerts, sporting events, and national days of celebration.

Sedgwick County will operate a non-emergency number for fireworks complaints. It is meant to receive calls for non-emergency nuisances that do not pose a threat to life or property. This includes fireworks complaints, parties and excess noise. The line will operate from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. from June 30 to July 5. Call 316-290-1011.

I don’t know about you, but I find myself searching the Internet every summer for new side dishes to take to barbecues. Joey is really, really not a mayonnaise fan, so the traditional offerings like potato salad and coleslaw are mostly out of the question.

Following is next week’s menus for Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels in both Sedgwick County and Sumner County. A change was made recently, and there are now different menus for Sedgwick County and Sumner County.
