One hurt, pets perish in weekend blaze in Back 9 CHENEY – A family from Cheney is working to rebuild their lives after a fire raged through their home early Saturday morning. The fire happened in the Back 9, a subdivision in the north part of Cheney that sits alongside Cherry Oaks Golf Course.

The Independence Day holiday will be at the end of next week, with a three-day weekend for people to enjoy. That also means, for many people, buying and shooting off fireworks.

Sedgwick County will operate a non-emergency number for fireworks complaints. It is meant to receive calls for non-emergency nuisances that do not pose a threat to life or property. This includes fireworks complaints, parties and excess noise.

SUMNER COUNTY – This year is the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. To celebrate, three Sumner County organizations are partnering to host the exhibit, “Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy,” from Humanities Kansas.

CHENEY – Last week’s Cheney Chamber of Commerce meeting might have been fast and short on attendance, but members were still able to make a handful of important decisions. The meeting was conducted by the Chamber’s vice president Lacy Thome, since president Jami Viner was unable to attend.

A total of 61 members from the South Central District were awarded their State FFA degree during the 98th Kansas FFA Convention, May 27-29, at Kansas State University. The state degree is the highest honor the Kansas FFA Association can bestow upon its members.
