Cheney approves new downtown buildings

CHENEY – At last Thursday's regular monthly meeting, the Cheney City Council approved the planned unit developments (PUDs) for two new buildings owned by Grady Laverentz, owner of Precision Plumbing located at the corner of Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue.

GP's 1% sales tax revenue beats projection

TSnews GARDEN PLAIN – In November 2021, Garden Plain voters approved a 1 percent local sales tax. 2023 was the first full year in which that tax was collected, and revenue nearly tripled the state's initial estimate of what it could raise.

CSMS scholar’s bowl wraps season

CONWAY SPRINGS – The Conway Springs Middle School scholar’s bowl teams traveled to Wichita Independent on Feb. 5. The eighth grade team of Kendall Baggs, Myles Becker, Kaelynn Downey, Jenny Murphy, Micah Wolke and Mason Zoglmann finished in fourth place with a 2-7 match record and 315 total points. They were 1-2 against Douglass (60-30, 30-80, 20-70) and Trinity Academy (70-65, 15-110, 20-90) and lost all three to Wichita Independent (2090, 40-60 and 40-50).

CONWAY SPRINGS – Connor Rusco has been selected as the January student of the month at Conway Springs High School, and Joseph Beck was the December student of the month. Students of the month are recognized for their positive attitudes, respect for school and others, and leadership.

Cheney school wins vocabulary bowl

In the closing months of 2023, the ninth Vocabulary Bowl saw an epic showdown of vocabulary prowess, as more than 380,000 students from 2,100 K-12 schools across the United States and Canada battled for word domination.

Newman names dean's list

Newman University has released its 2023 fall dean's list. A total of 413 undergraduate students achieved the qualifications required, completing at least 12 credit hours and achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Kiser earns K-State degree

ARGONIA – Christian Kiser, son of Kimball and Janis Kiser of Argonia, was a December graduate from Kansas State University. Kiser earned a degree in political science with a minor in mass communications.
