Cooking up ‘gourd’ things

Early to mid-October is one of the harder times of year for me to decide what to cook. Since the Kansas weather can’t make up its mind, I’m never sure if it will be a day where I’m happy to heat up my kitchen by firing up the oven or if I’ll regret raising the temperature in our house.
Fall chicken and vegetables features all the flavors of the season with sweet butternut squash, earthy Brussels sprouts and plenty of garlic, along with cheesy tortellini and paprika-seasoned chicken.

Ingredients 3 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed 12 ounces Brussels sprouts, halved 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided 9 ounces cheese tortellini 1 pound boneless/skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into strips 2 teaspoons paprika 2 teaspoons thyme 3 tablespoons butter 6 to 8 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper, to taste.

Beesley stays involved with 4-H

TSnews CONWAY SPRINGS – Gavin Beesley, a former 4-H member with the Conway Springs Cardinals, is continuing to be part of 4-H but at the county level. Beesley joined K-State Research and Extension-Sumner County as the 4-H Youth Development Agent on Sept.
Gavin Beesley will continue to be part of 4-H as part of the K-State Research and Extension-Sumner County team.

Juneteenth named state holiday

Gov. Laura Kelly has announced that Kansas will designate Juneteenth as a state holiday, joining 28 other states and the District of Columbia.

Mission auction is Saturday

CLEARWATER – The annual auction for missions and pulled pork dinner, hosted by the Clearwater United Methodist Church, will take place Saturday. It starts with a silent auction at 4 p.m., and the auction runs until 6 p.m.

Student with gun leads to ‘hold mode’ at high school

Staff report TSnews Students at Campus High School in Haysville were placed in “hold mode” on Tuesday morning after a student brought a gun to the school. There were no threats and no injuries, and Haysville Police officers took possession of a gun.
