TSnews The Argonia Raiders’ volleyball season ended last Tuesday – not with a loss on the court, but by a decision handed down by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Shortly before last Tuesday’s Class 1A Division II regional at Argonia, KSHSAA ruled that the Raiders had played too many quadrangular and triangular matches during the regular season and thus were ineligible for postseason play.
The Conway Springs Cardinals celebrate their Class 2A substate volleyball championship, won at home over St. Mary’s-Colgan. The Cardinals are making their first trip to State since 2005. See more in Sports, starting on Page B1. Travis Mounts/TSnews

Shooting range to reopen after lead testing

CHENEY LAKE – The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced that the Cheney Shooting Range in Reno County will reopen in October following an investigation assisted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) into potential lead contamination. Results from soil, groundwater, and stream surveys confirm the range is safe for public use with no threat to the public or wildlife.

130 Years Ago A fire destroyed a granary, 10 tons of hay, 196 bushels of rent wheat, 50 bushels of wheat, two wagons, two header boxes loaded with corn, and other contents of the building at the Wm. Whitmer home four miles west of here in Kingman County last Friday night.

9 Years Ago Ruth Clark died last week at the age of 89. Clark was a beloved teacher who was honored in 2000 as the namesake of Haysville's Ruth Clark Elementary.

From October 1943 St. Joseph’s parochial school, which has an enrollment of 125 pupils in eight grades, inaugurated a hot lunch program in the school Monday. The lunchroom is in charge of Mrs. Waldo Gilges, assisted by Miss Betty Lou Friess.
