Lions take second at 5A regional

The Goddard Lions wrestling team will be well-represented at the Class 5A State tournament as it seeks to defend its State boys title. The Lions qualified eight for State at last weekend’s Class 5A West boys regional at Hays, including three regional champions in Oscar Gauna (113 pounds), Nick Miller (138) and Kolton McElwain (157).

Clearwater duo swims at league

With just two swimmers, the Clearwater Indians still managed to place eighth as a team as the AVCTL Div. III-IV championship last weekend in Hutchinson.

Cannon Schwerdtfeger and Hunter Ramsey placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 100- yard butterfly.

Schwerdtfeger – a 5-1A State qualifier – also placed fourth in the 500 freestyle. Ramsey took sixth in the 100 backstroke. With 56 points, they finished ahead of Wellington and Andale.

Ike teams, Cheney boys bowl well

Three Clearwater Indians make 4A State

TSnews The Clearwater Indians wrestling team will have three girls competing later this month at the Class 4A State wrestling tournament after a strong performance last weekend at the Class 4A West girls regional tournament in Augusta. Graysea Gardenhire (120 pounds) finished fourth, while Liv Miller (190) took fifth and Peyton Newell (130) finished sixth to punch their tickets to the State tournament.

Cards take fourth at CPL

TSnews The Cheney Cardinals wrestling team wrapped up the regular season last Thursday as it took fourth at the Central Plains League tournament, with three wrestlers taking second and two more finishing fourth Caeden Mruk (138 pounds), Colton Veach (165) and Landen Witte (175) all took second, while the duo of Kameron Totty (106) and Cole Vestering (144) both placed fourth. “Colton Veach and Caeden Mruk both wrestled well,” Cheney coach Kevin Schultz said, “but fell just short of a league championship.” Cheney’s female wrestlers headed to Augusta last weekend for the Class 4A West regional, where Abriana Sanders (125 pounds) and Emma Arnold (135) both finished their seasons.

Colts qualifies 10 for 6A State tourney

TSnews The Campus Colts girls wrestling team had a weekend to remember at last weekend’s Class 6A West girls regional tournament at Wichita South. The Colts took sixth as a team with 146 1/22 points, but more than that are sending 10 wrestlers to State after strong performances at Wichita South.

Two Owls win league titles, two girls headed for State

TSnews The Garden Plain Owls wrestling team had a strong end to the regular season last week – then had a strong start to the postseason last weekend. Last Thursday, the Owls took second at the Central Plains League tournament at Garden Plain with 114 points, 24 behind league champion Chaparral and far ahead of third-place Douglass.

Tigers sending six girls to 5A State wrestling

TSnews The Eisenhower Tigers wrestling team will be well-represented in the girls division of the Class 5A State wrestling tournament later this month as six girls punched their tickets for State at last weekend’s Class 5A West regional at Newton. Leading the way for the Tigers is Sadie Kuehn (115 pounds), who finished second at Newton, while the duo of Tori York (100) and Kyrah Martinez (155) both took fourth.

Maryah Jones (155 pounds) and Sophia Castorena (190) both finished second, while Brooklyn Simpson (120) placed sixth and the duo of Brooklyn Smith (125) and Haley Stucky (130) both finished seventh.

Indians lose fifth in a row

TSnews The Clearwater Indians boys basketball team’s losing streak hit five games when it fell 66-28 at Pratt on Monday. The Indians fall to 3-16 with the loss.
