The Halstead Dragons had a dominant first half in defeating the Garden Plain Owls girls basketball team 50-34 in Saturday’s Class 3A substate championship in Haven. The Dragons limited the Owls’ offense to 14 first-half points, fewer points than the Dragons scored in each of the first two quarters.

Season ends for Indians boys

TSnews Nate Eck wrapped up a strong season on the mat for the Garden Plain Owls when he finished fifth at the Class 3-2-1A State wrestling tournament last Saturday at Fort Hays State University. Eck shook off a quarterfinal loss to Corbin Franklin of Rawlins County to win three of his final four matches, including a 6-0 decision over Karsen Garner of Flinthills in the fifth-place match.

Conway Springs girls win substate opener

TSnews The Conway Springs Cardinals girls basketball team had little trouble in its Class 2A substate opener against the Republic County Buffaloes last Thursday, rolling to a 45-13 win. The Cardinals sprinted out to an 11-3 lead after the opening period, then pitched a shutout in the second quarter to take a 24-3 lead to the locker room.

Cheney beats Council Grove

Argonia girls close in on State berth

TSnews The Argonia Raiders girls basketball team continued its march toward its first State tournament appearance in many years with a 60-28 win over the Minneola Wildcats in Class 1A Division II substate semifinal action at Argonia. “It’s always exciting to get a postseason win and even more to get a chance to go to State,” Argonia coach Morgan Grippin said.
