Memorial Day is celebrated annually on the last Monday of May across the United States. The proximity of Memorial Day to the summer solstice has led many to view the weekend preceding the holiday as the unofficial kickoff to summer. However, Memorial Day is about more than backyard barbecues and weekend getaways.

A first-grade teacher at Nelson Elementary School, Hall fought against terminal liver cancer for more than a year, undergoing treatments and dealing with symptoms while continuing her 38-year career as an educator in Haysville’s public schools.

CONWAY SPRINGS – Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WEC) has announced that Brooke Beck, a senior at Conway Springs High School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship Wednesday, April 23, at WEC’s annual meeting in Scott City.

Extension A Kansas State University horticulture expert says not all trees should be salvaged if they were damaged by storms and heavy winds that hit parts of Kansas in late April. Cynthia Domenghini said landowners should evaluate trees to determine if the bark has been split, exposing the cambium, or those where the main trunk has split.
