Cheney's Self honored by Okie State

CHENEY – Levi Self, a Cheney High School student, was honored by the Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture with academic scholarship support for the 2026-2027 academic year. Self, an agribusiness major, will receive the E. Dwayne Walls Family Scholarship. Scholarships were awarded at the 2026 scholarship and awards banquet, hosted by the Ferguson College on March 26.

Sumner County group releases postcard book

TSnews The Sumner County Historical and Genealogical Society marked a major milestone recently when it published its first book, “Peeking into the Past of Sumner County, Kansas,” a collection of postcards related to Sumner County. “I will almost wager there's going to be things in the book that people didn't know, because we were looking for old things, you know?”said Sherry Stocking-Kline, vice-president of the Sumner County Historical and Genealogical Society.

CONWAY SPRINGS – The 2026 Bike Across Kansas (BAK) kicks off on June 6, and will make a stop in Conway Springs. The Bike Across Kansas tour is an annual celebration of bicycling, history, and camaraderie.

GP council votes to oppose data center

TSnews GARDEN PLAIN – The Garden Plain City Council voted unanimously April 1 to direct City Attorney Morgan Koon to draft a letter of opposition to the Sedgwick County Commission regarding construction of a data center in the Garden Plain area. The vote marked a shift from a public statement the governing body issued March 26, which took a neutral tone, saying the city was 'waiting to see how Sedgwick County establishes zoning regulations for permitting such data centers' and would 'continue to monitor the proposed developments.' As he made the motion to draft the opposition letter, council member Tracy Thul criticized how some residents had communicated with elected officials.

GODDARD – The winners from the recent Goddard Woman’s Club Art Show have been named. The annual show was held at Dove Estates in Goddard, and featured artwork from students at Cheney, Eisenhower, Garden Plain and Goddard high schools.

Hearing scheduled for solar farm

TSnews SEDGWICK COUNTY – The Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission (MAPC) will hold a special hearing on April 29 to consider a solar application from Mission Clean Energy. The proposed solar farm, called the Galena Project, would be located between South Hoover Road to South 119th Street West, and West 47th Street South to West 63rd Street South.
