Pair of photographers shine at Kansas State Fair

TSnews Two local young photographers recently received some high honors for their work at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. Abigail Kerschen, who is a member of Quail Valley 4-H in Garden Plain, and Lucas Baalman from Ninnescah Valley 4-H in Clearwater, both won purple ribbons for their photography at the Kansas State Fair recently.

Success in 4-H a family tradition for Harlans

TSnews Success in 4-H has become a family tradition for the Harlans. Wyatt Harlan won several purple ribbons at last year’s Sumner County Fair and Sumner County 4-H Fair – and this year, Wyatt and his sister, Allie, both won purple ribbons for fine arts at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Foul odor in fridge,freezer could be food safety issue

Extension A bad smell in the refrigerator or freezer might be more than just an unpleasant inconvenience for homeowners; it could signal a potential food safety issue, says a Kansas State University food safety specialist. Karen Blakeslee, coordinator of K-State’s Rapid Response Center for food science, said spoiled food can lead to a large amount of bacterial growth, and cooking these foods may not destroy those high levels of bacteria.

From November 1923 Conway Springs High School easily retained its football standing by defeating Harper 73-0 last Friday. Ralph Hickson and Pete Jenkins were given the ball to take over for touchdowns throughout the game. Carl Richardson played his usual fast game, scoring one touchdown from receiving a Harper kickoff. CSHS has played three league teams and three outside teams and has won them all with a total scoring of 281 points to the opponents’ 13.

9 Years Ago While Haysville doesn’t yet have properties listed on the National and/or State Register of Historic Places, residents have been forward-thinking in preparing for that possibility. At Monday’s city council meeting, Katrina Ringler, certified local government coordinator for the Kansas Historical Society, celebrated Haysville’s placement on a list of 18 CLGs throughout Kansas.

140 Years Ago A seven-pound turnip, grown by Ed Roembach, east of town, is on exhibit at Schmidt and Wolf ’s land office. 110 Years Ago The old cottonwood tree, which has stood on Main almost ever since the inception of the town, was chopped down Monday afternoon by James Flinn.

Search is on for next Renwick superintendent

GARDEN PLAIN – The process to find a replacement for departing USD 267 chief Tim Hayden is underway. The Renwick School Board voted at its Monday evening meeting to hire KASB, the Kansas Association of School Boards, to begin looking for candidates.
