High school sports teams returned to action this week. Some basketball teams played on Tuesday, while others return to the court this Friday.

State football championships by two different Cardinal football teams highlighted the local year in sports, but 2023 was full of many other great moments from January through December. Here is a look at the year in sports.

TSnews On the road at Newton, the Eisenhower Tigers girls held the Railers to just 16 points in a 37-16 win on Dec. 19.

TSnews The Eisenhower Tigers boys basketball team lost their final game of the fall semester, 55-53 at Newton on Dec. 19.

TSnews The Andale Indians topped the Garden Plain Owls girls basketball team, 34-29, in a low-scoring game that matched the two high schools in the Renwick School District. The Owls shot better from the floor, making 43.3 percent of their shots, but the Indians sank four 3-point shots to a single one for the Owls, helping offset the shooting difference.

TSnews The Garden Plain Owls basketball team ended the December portion of the schedule with a 54-37 loss at the Andale Indians on Dec. 19.

TSnews The Conway Springs Cardinals basketball team will take a nice winning streak into the new year after winning its fourth game in a row last Tuesday. Last Tuesday against Belle Plaine, the Cardinals used a strong second- quarter performance and led by 18 points going to the fourth quarter on the way to a 47-36 win.

TSnews Coming off its biggest loss of the season, the Conway Springs Cardinals girls basketball team needed a solid win to close out 2023. Mission accomplished.

TSnews A referee’s call of goal-tending as time expired gave the Hutchinson Salthawks a 51-49 victory over the host Campus Colts boys basketball team on Dec. 19, as both teams wrapped up the December portions of their schedules.

TSnews The Hutchinson Salthawks beat the Campus Colts girls basketball team 52-19 in Haysville last week on Tuesday, sending the Colts into the holiday break still looking for their first victory. The Colts had just four offensive rebounds, their fewest of the season.
