GP girls pick up win after slow start

TSnews After dropping their first two games of the season last week, the Garden Plain Owls girls basketball team rebounded for a convincing 62-30 win over the Trinity Academy Knights in Wichita. It was a good response after the Owls lost at Wellington and dropped a home game against Moundridge.

Defending champs top Cheney boys

TSnews The Sterling Black Bears, the defending Class 2A champions, looked like they are ready to defend their title as the beat the Cheney Cardinals 6943 at Cheney last week. It was a tough start for the Cardinals, who have a new look after losing a large senior class to graduation.

Cards seventh at El Dorado

TSnews The Cheney Cardinals wrestled in their first tournaments of the new season last weekend, with the boys taking seventh at the El Dorado Wrestling Tournament and their two girls competing at a tournament in McPherson. Leading the Cardinals on the boys side was Kameron Totty (106 pounds), who took third, while Cayle Mruk (132) placed fourth, Caeden Mruk (138) finished sixth and the trio of Cole Vestering (138), Colton Veach (165) and Landen Witte (175) all finished seventh.

Tigers place four in top four at Pratt

TSnews The Eisenhower Tigers wrestling team had four wrestlers place in the top four – three boys and a girl – at boys and girls invites at Pratt last weekend. On the boys side, Malachi Rothenberger (150 pounds) and Abe Starnes (165) each took second last Saturday, while Blayre Cline (175) took third.

Tigers swim to fourth at Newton

TSnews The Eisenhower and Goddard swimming and diving team placed fourth in the nine-team Newton Invitational last Thursday. The Tigers and the Buhler Crusaders battled for third place, with Buhler edging Eisenhower by 3 points, 165-162.

Owls fifth at El Dorado

TSnews The Garden Plain Owls boys wrestling team opened its season in strong fashion last weekend by taking fifth at the always-tough El Dorado Wrestling Tournament. “I’m pleased with the boys performance overall,” Garden Plain coach Travis Daerr said.

Gauna, Spangler win titles for Lions

TSnews The Goddard Lions boys and girls wrestling teams did not back down from a challenge to open the season last weekend, with the boys heading to the always-tough Gardner- Edgerton Invitational and the girls heading to the Pratt Invitational. When it was all said and done, two Lions – Oscar Gauna for the boys and Reanna Spangler for the girls – brought home titles.

Five Indians make medal stand at Pratt

TSnews The Clearwater Indians wrestled their first tournaments of the season last weekend at Pratt, with the girls wrestling last Friday and the boys competing the next day. When it was all said and done, the boys finished ninth and the girls placed 10th.

Colts win Valley Center Girls Invitational

TSnews The Campus Colts girls wrestling team made quite the impression in its first tournament of the season last weekend as it won the Valley Center Girls Invitational. The Colts won the tournament with 214 points, 33 more than runner-up Derby.
