Conway Springs to host workshop

CONWAY SPRINGS – The members of the zoning board of Conway Springs and the Conway Springs City Council will hold a training workshop on Monday. The training will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the city council chambers.

‘American 250’ program rescheduled

WELLINGTON – Due to last weekend’s winter storm, the Sumner County Historical and Genealogical Society has rescheduled the presentation “America 250: Stories from the Revolutionary War.” The presentation, originally set for earlier this week, will now take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Cowley College, Short General Education Center, Room 113, 2208 Davis-White Loop, Wellington.

Masons donate to Haysville homeless program

HAYSVILLE – The Kansas Masonic Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to benefitting Kansas communities, has partnered with Haysville Lodge No. 112 to donate $1,600 to the Haysville United Methodist Church Feed the Homeless Program. The volunteer-run program serves a complimentary monthly meal for local individuals in need.

Legislature considers school cell phone ban

Will Kansas be the next state to ban cell phone use by students during school hours? That ban is being considered by the Kansas state legislature in the form of Senate Bill 302, which would mandate school districts to prohibit the use of personal electronic communication devices during the school day and also forbid any school district employee from using social media to directly communicate with students for official school purposes. The bill is currently in committee.

Renwick meets in special session

The USD 267 Renwick Board of Education held a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss non-elected personnel. Nothing more specific was mentioned, but it is likely that this meeting was to make a decision on whom the board members want as the next superintendent. The meeting happened after this week’s newspaper was printed and mailed.

Snow, cold should do little or no harm to winter wheat

Despite the recent snow and cold temperatures, the winter wheat crop should ultimately be fine. While too much cold weather can damage winter wheat, the crop is known for its hardiness, said Jeff Seiler, Sedgwick County Extension’s agricultural agent.
