News of our folks in the service- Corp. Robert L. O’Conner, stationed at Maxwell Field, Ala., expects to be transferred from there at the last of this month. Bill Genemaras is taking special work in radio at the University of Wisconsin; he can already type and receive code. Bob McIlhenny is now stationed on Umnak Island in the Aleutians.
Oatville Elementary School will see another round of work this summer as the Haysville School District’s bond projects move toward completion. Much of the work in the $59 million bond was done last summer or will be done this summer, all in an effort to minimize disruptions to students. Oatville Elementary, located near the intersection of Hoover Road and MacArthur Road, in the northwest part of the district, already has a new parking lot. That work was done last summer.
April Love, theme of the Argonia High School Junior-Senior Banquet, was attractively carried out in the decorations in the dining room held at the grade school. Wayne Johnson assumed duties as postmaster of the Argonia post office.
130 Years Ago Chas Brown and Harvey Trezler started Tuesday for a trip overland through the western counties of the state. 120 Years Ago William Parham has rented the room between Zimmerman’s and Campbell’s stores and started up a harness shop.
Earth Day is not the only date on the calendar in April to honor the environment. Another spring holiday with many of the same ideals has been around for a lot longer, though few notice today.
• The first US Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872, after being proposed by the secretary of the Nebraska Territory, J. Sterling Morton.

Times-Sentinel Newspapers has launched a new website for its weekly newspaper, TSnews. The new website, which debuted last Friday, expands the digital offerings for both readers and advertisers in the communities served by TSnews, including Argonia, Cheney, Clearwater, Conway Springs, Garden Plain, Goddard, Haysville, Milan and Viola.
HAYSVILLE – Since 1997, Form Systems Inc. in Haysville’s industrial park has been producing insulated concrete forms (ICFs), which are used for pouring below-grade and above-grade concrete walls for homes and other buildings.
