From April 1930 The local school placed second in the most complete high school county scholarship contest ever held in Sumner County. Conway Springs students who were medal winners in the entire contest, competing against all other students in the county were: Pauline Lange, tied first in English II; Otis Brubaker, first in English III; Leo Freund, first, Lucille Young, second, and Ralph Hopper, third, in algebra; Pauline Lange, first, and Maxine Purcell, second in Latin; Otis Brubaker, second in Constitution; Luther Shetlar, tied for first, and Viola McCool, third in Latin I; Elizabeth Gwin, third in geometry; Norma Myers and Hester Davis, tied with two others for second in Foods I; Clark Evans, second, and Olive Burchinal, third in music, Donals Small, tied for second and Claude Gray, third in agriculture; Otis Brubaker, first, Mervin Myers, second, and Lloyd Bradshaw, tied for third in physics.

8 Years Ago On Monday, April 10, a ribbon cutting was held at the new footbridge in Dorner Park. The footbridge was the last project completed by Haysville public works director Randy Dorner, who died unexpectedly in November.

CSHS men win powerlifting title

CONWAY SPRINGS – The Conway Springs Cardinals powerlifting men’s team recently won the Class 1A State championship. The Cardinals, who also hosted the meet, scored 46 points to claim the title.

Haysville school bond passes by large margin

TSnews By a 3-1 margin, voters in the Haysville School District have approved a $79.725 million bond issue for significant maintenance projects. Tuesday’s results were 1,345 votes in favor and 455 against, or 75 percent to 25 percent.

Garden Plain to send RFQ for pool project

TSnews GARDEN PLAIN – At its meeting April 2, the Garden Plain City Council voted to issue a Request for Qualifications as it seeks a construction firm for the city’s municipal pool project. The project will be let out with a gross maximum price of $3.27 million.

Cake Ingredients 12 ounces dates, pitted and diced 1 1/2 cups strong hot coffee or espresso 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar 1 egg 1 tablespoon vanilla 1 3/4 cup flour 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped Glaze Ingredients 2 tablespoons hot water 1/2 to 1 teaspoon instant espresso or coffee powder 2 cups powdered sugar 3 tablespoons butter, melted 2 teaspoons vanilla 1/2 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped Cake Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a nine-by-five inch loaf pan by greasing it and lining it on the bottom and sides with parchment paper.
