Rain slows down wheat harvest

Body
Moisture is likely too late to be of much help The Kansas wheat harvest got off to a slow start last week, and has been further delayed by rains that have come too late to help. If anything, the latest rain creates more problems by keeping farmers out of their fields.
Combines sit idle in a field north of Conway Springs last week. A few farmers started cutting as early as June 7, and more began to get into their fields last week. Recent rain has further delayed some farmers, while other fields are still green. The rain likely will do little to benefit the 2023 wheat crop, but should help out fall crops that already have been planted. Travis Mounts/TSnews

Legislators targeted with suspicious powder

Body
Roughly 100 Kansas legislators and public officials were targeted last week by letters containing a suspicious white powder, according to information from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. A sample of the powder was sent to a laboratory that specializes in testing biological samples, the KBI reported, and preliminary tests were negative for “common biological agents of concern.” Additional testing is planned.
Kansas State Rep. Stephen Owens (R-Hesston) shared a copy of the letter that was sent to him from an anonymous sender. Roughly 100 letters with an unknown white powder were sent to state legislators and state officials. State Rep. Stephen Owens/Contributed photo
